This is one of our oldest specimens, dating from the mid-1880s judging by the dates on the top. This puts it less than 10 years after rolled/perforated toilet paper appeared, when hygienic value was a common theme among the toilet tissue manufacturers. It's in a sealed canister which has never been opened. The manufacturer makes some pretty impressive claims regarding its quality and medicinal - below the images is a transcript of the printing on the canister, with the position of each block of text corresponding to that of the image on which it appears.

properly medicated is of great value in surgical
practice, but the attempts to produce a Medicated Toilet Paper have resulted only in a so-call- ed article, differing in no way from ordinary paper. That Toilet Paper as a vehicle for remedies for Hemorrhoids would be of great value in that regular application woild be assured, is ob- vious, and innumerable attempts have been made to medicate it, but hith- erto without success. Its light- ness seeming to preclude appli- cation to the finished sheet, all attempts have been made thro' the admixture of drugs with the pulp. As many of the most valued agents will not unite with water, few are available, and of those only the cheapest, on account of the excessive amount of water with which the pulp is diluted, pre- paratory to passing to the forming machinery, where all water is removed, carrying with it all that may have been added with a view of medicating. Only a trace is discoverable by chemical analysis. So fre- quent were the calls received by us for a Medicated Toilet Paper, that we instituted a series of experiments |

determine if such an article could be produced, and
if so, whether we could discover a rapid process and machinery to manufacture it at a cost that would place it within the reach of the general public. The first we have demonstrated as practicable. The second, also, so far as the process and manufacturing by machin- ery, and we believe that it will be conceded that the value of the product, con- sidered the price, is remarkably low. There will be no ques- tion as to its being medi- cated; its appearance ind- cates it, and as a matter of fact fully twenty per cent of its weight is due to the remedial agents it contains. Only those indorsed [sic] by the medical profession are used, and of these the most valued. The incorporation of so large a percentage with the paper neces- sarily increases its cost, but our process is so rapid, and the machinery so efficient, that there is little additional expense. We offer this paper at a very slight advance over the price of our plain paper, making due allowance for the actual cost of the remedial agents |
